The Filadelfia Way of Life

Home to approximately 8,000 people, Filadelfia was once known as “Seven Leather Trees” or Siete Cueros in Spanish due to the abundance of these types of trees in the area. The village was named Filadelfia after a local soldier, Filadelfia Soto, in 1877. Often called “the Archeological City,” this town is famous for its pre-Colombian roads and prehistoric treasures, and tourists flock to the archeological sites in Filadelfia for this reason.

Like the rest of the country, Filadelfia celebrates Holy Week the week before Easter Sunday with processions, masses and prayers. In July, Filadelfia also holds “Cultural and Sports Week” which includes opportunities for adults and children to partake in typical dances, parades, and theater as well as sports such as cycling, soccer, basketball, and chess.

Excellent private hospitals can be found in nearby Liberia, including the Centro Médico San Rafael Arcángel and the new CIMA Hospital extension, both of which are commonly used by expats and retirees in the region.  Both hospitals offer cutting-edge medical equipment, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology department, 24-hour emergency room, and operating rooms.
