Schools and Education
There are no private schools in the area. The public schools run from February to December, coinciding with the coffee-picking season. The schools are Spanish-only, though they offer one class per day of English. The Costa Rican curriculum is complete, though the material is usually about a year behind the schools in the States. Parents often take advantage of this level adjustment by having their children take full time Spanish lessons for a few months to a year before enrolling them in the public schools. Costa Rica invests 30% of its national budget in education and they enjoy a 95% literacy rate. The country has a slogan, “more teachers than policemen.”
