The inhabitants of Atenas are known to have one of the highest life expectancies on the planet (including higher life expectancies than persons living in the United States), and most attribute their longevity to the amazing weather,  lack of stress, and plentiful produce enjoyed in this part of the country.

Similar to the town of Grecia, located nearby, this town has become one of the favorite places to live in the world.  It known globally as a paradise for retirees, which is why one will find a large population of Americans and Europeans living in the area.  In fact, the AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) has consistently named Atenas as one of the “Best Places to Retire Abroad.”

Security is another reason Atenas has become so attractive for foreigners.  The town is packed with welcoming and smiling inhabitants.  The peaceful and quiet atmosphere of this friendly town  makes most people fall in love with Atenas within minutes of walking through its streets.

Convenient and Central Location

The Juan Santa Maria International Airport—which is one of only two international airports in the country—is located a mere 20 minutes away, making international travel a close and convenient option.  Expats located in Atenas are quick to say that visiting family and friends back home is never a problem.

As for travel within Costa Rica, Atenas’s location as a central city makes moving to any part of the country easy, and all national highways are accessible from Atenas.  A 50-minute ride from Atenas will take you to Jaco, a fast-growing beach community, for all of the sand and surf you can enjoy.
