Life in Florencia is all about family, and whether one is in a family of two or of ten, they take time to be at home together. The parents often work hard during the day and then enjoy time playing with the kids and helping with homework in the evening. It’s common for families to have BBQs on the porch almost nightly, since the weather as the sun sets is delightful. The windows are almost always left open while people are home, allowing the cool breeze to sweep through.

There are shops all around Florencia for any specialty item one might want, from pastries to electronics. English is widely spoken. There are many medical clinics that are used to servicing medical tourists. Jobs are available in the tourism, shipping, and transportation industries. Florencia is the only town in the region with a 24-hour gas station and mini supermarket

The local Catholic church hosts a number of parades and festivals throughout the year. As for festivals, due to the large amount of Ticos and Nicaraguans who have moved to Florencia from Guanacaste, the celebration of “Guanacaste Day” here is almost as impressive as it is in Guanacaste itself. There are fireworks, songs, performances, dances, costumes, specialty foods and drinks, and rides for the kids. Restaurante la Hacienda is often the place to be when celebrating a special time, such as a birthday or an anniversary.

Florencia is just outside of the Children’s Eternal Rainforest, the country’s largest private reserve. The Children’s Eternal Rainforest Reserve exists because children in 44 countries engaged in a fundraising campaign that started in Sweden and the US in 1987. In 2007, the Children’s Eternal Rainforest was declared part of the Peace and Water Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This impressive reserve protects many wild animals and has done a substantial job at reforestation.
