Once a quiet fishing village, many surfers discovered Dominical decades ago and decided to never leave. The town may be popular with surfers, but it still has a quiet, laid back vibe surrounded by stunning nature. Some expats are heading to the small community of Escaleras, which lies on the steep dirt road above Dominical and offers sweeping ocean views. Unlike the beach community, this neighborhood is only accessible by private car.

The town has three small grocery stores, a fruit stand, expat-owned hostels and hotels, and even a few healthy organic vegetarian restaurants. Nearby, Uvita has a farmer’s market every Saturday morning with organic produce and artisan goods made by expats from all over the world. The yoga studio Bamboo Yoga Play offers yoga, dance, and meditation classes and even puts on fire dancing shows.
