Life in Heredia

Local Attractions in Alajeula Costa Rica

Heredia

Heredia offers a plethora of activities from golf to shopping.  One of the first modern shopping malls to be built in Costa Rica can be found in Heredia's San Joaquin de Flores Mall, offering shoppers everything from home decorating stores, boutiques, movie theaters and first rate restaurants. Tip – don't miss the Inka Grill, a Peruvian restaurant at Flores Mall for a delicious lunch or dinner.

Additional quality restaurants can be found at some of the area's top hotels: Los Vitrales at the Bougainvillea in Santo Domingo is a 10-acre tropical garden oasis replete with tennis courts and an oversized swimming pool. El Tigre Vestido at Finca Rosa Blanca in Santa Barbara de Heredia is also a popular choice. Considered a sustainable boutique hotel, this beautiful working coffee plantation provides tours and coffee tastings with gourmet lunch and dinners open to both hotel guests and the public in a lovely Costa Rican setting.

Golf enthusiasts will find the Melia Cariari Golf Course (also referred to as Cariari Golf Club)—the first designer championship course in Central America and originally a private course—now open to the general public. With long fairways and well maintained grounds, those not interested in walking can/should opt for a cart. The restaurant here is popular with both locals and visitors.

The downtown area of Heredia can get a bit congested with traffic and buses, as is true of most major towns in the meseta central, or central valley, but it is easy enough to navigate and within minutes you can be in the lovely verdant hills enjoying scenic views.

Many have discovered Heredia's climate to be more to their liking when compared to points along either of Costa Rica's coastlines. Spring like weather and regular rainfall keep the hills of Heredia green and cool throughout the year. In fact, some areas of Heredia such as San Isidro de Heredia, Poas and San Rafael, have elevations at over 5,000 feet, which allow many homes to enjoy a welcoming, toasty fireplace.

Visitors and residents have the opportunity to experience the real Costa Rica in Heredia, with its natural beauty and a wide variety of activities. Hiking, art shows, coffee plantation tours and tastings, local events, biking, and volcano viewing are but a sampling of all that is available for both residents and visiting guests.
