Activities in Montezuma, Costa Rica.

The Beach

Montezuma has three beaches. Montezuma Beach is right in town with white sand beaches, dramatic black rocks, and a crashing sea. Playa Piedra Colorada, just a short walk from town, is great for swimming. Here, the river meets the ocean, which creates little pools for bathing in, and it’s even possible to find natural Jacuzzis in this area. Playa Grande has a long, flat black sand beach and waves for beginner surfing. Further from town on the way to Cabuya are many more beaches to explore on horseback, ATV, scooter, or by car.

Surfing

Playa Grande is a great place for beginners to try surfing. The break is close to the shore, which requires little paddling, and the waves tend to be small. There are surf schools in town for those looking to have a lesson.  Alternatively, one can simply rent a board and practice independently. Always check the conditions first as sometimes there are strong currents.

Trip to Isla Tortuga

A major attraction in Montezuma is the nearby island Isla Tortuga. Tours depart from Montezuma daily and take passengers on a speed boat out for snorkeling and stop at Isla Tortuga for relaxation and a big beach BBQ. The water is calm and clear and the island even has a resident wild peccary who is quite accustomed to tourists.

Fishing

Montezuma has excellent fishing and plenty of local fishermen who take tourists out on their boats for the day.

Waterfalls

Montezuma is famous for its many waterfalls. A short twenty minute walk from the town center is a dramatic waterfall surrounded by jungle with a natural pool below for swimming in. Another excursion is to the Chorro waterfall, which is a two-hour hike north along Montezuma’s seven beaches. This trip is often taken on a horsebackriding tour at low tide or at night under the full moon.

Cabo Blanco National Park

Just outside of Montezuma lies the Cabo Blanco National Park on the Southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It was the first ever national park in Costa Rica and is home to many rare and endangered species of animals. This park is the last example of Nicoya’s unique mixed evergreen and moist tropical forest. Visitors are allowed to come and hike the trails and swim in the many tide pools that surround the coast.
