Climate and Location in Orosi, Costa Rica.

Orosí is located in the Cartago province of Costa Rica. The town itself is found ten miles south from the heart of Cartago, the country’s first capital. Orosí is located just around 20 miles from San Jose, making it easy to travel to either city when desired.

The Cartago province typically has temperate, cool weather with a rainy season lasting from May to November. The average temperature in Orosí can range from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.   In essence, it possesses the picture-perfect weather that the Costa Rica’s Central Valley is known for.

The views of Orosí Valley are what makes this once small town a popular tourist and retirement location. The Mirador de Orosí makes for an excellent viewing site. This viewpoint is located about three miles outside the center of town and, from here, the Orosí river and nearly the entire valley are visible. While there are no ocean views, a bird’s eye view of the sprawling valley is sure to delight the senses, and will quickly make one want to settle in the area.

Getting There and the Surrounding Area

Public busses run regularly from Cartago to Orosí and vice versa. The town’s proximity to Cartago and San Jose makes it easy to escape the hustle and bustle of city life without being too far away from amenities. Paved roads allow for a smooth drive. Most visitors find it useful to confirm directions with a local hotel or business as street signs and addresses are rarely used in Costa Rica.

The closest airport to Orosí is the Juan Santamaria International Airport found in Alajuela. The distance between the two areas is around 35 miles with an average driving time of one and a half hours.

Besides Cartago and San Jose, Orosí is conveniently located near the Tapantí National Park. This rainforest reserve and wildlife refuge is home to tropical birds, waterfalls, dense vegetation and heavy precipitation. Many visitors horseback ride, hike, swim, or try to catch a glimpse of the elusive quetzal bird. Fishing is also a popular pastime, especially for the local trout varieties.
