Playa Avellanas Local Guide
Avellanas is a surf town first — a long, beautiful beach backed by mangroves and dry forest, a handful of beloved restaurants, and not much else by design. It is the antidote to busier Tamarindo, which is still close enough for everything you need.
The Surf
Avellanas is one of Costa Rica’s most consistent surf beaches — nicknamed “Little Hawaii” — with multiple breaks suited to everyone from beginners (at the river-mouth and beach breaks) to experienced surfers chasing the bigger reef sets.
The Beach
A wide, walkable stretch of sand with tide pools, rocky points, and easy public access — quiet on weekdays and never built-up. Great for long walks, swimming on calmer days, and watching the sunset.
Dining
The legendary Lola’s — famous for beachfront tables and its resident pig — is the quintessential Avellanas lunch and sunset spot, joined by community gathering places like La Esquina and a growing handful of cafes and local sodas.
Nearby Tamarindo
About 15–20 minutes north, Tamarindo offers supermarkets, banks, medical services, restaurants, and nightlife — so Avellanas residents get village calm with town convenience close at hand.

Getting Here & Around
Playa Avellanas is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Liberia International Airport (LIR). A 4x4 or SUV is useful on the local roads, and a car makes trips into Tamarindo and along the coast easy.
