Ocotal pairs a quiet, secluded cove with the full conveniences of Playas del Coco just minutes away. Here’s a quick orientation for residents and visitors.
The cove & the water
Ocotal’s small, protected horseshoe bay — about a third of a mile of dark volcanic sand — is one of the calmest on the coast, ideal for swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, with abundant marine life close to shore. It’s also a premier launch point for scuba diving and sportfishing, with boats heading to Monkey Head Rock, the Catalina and Tortuga Islands, and the Bat Islands.
Dining & everyday services
Ocotal has a handful of beachfront and resort restaurants, and all of Coco’s dining, supermarkets (including a U.S.-style Auto Mercado), banks, pharmacies, gyms, and shops are five to ten minutes away. You get seclusion without sacrificing convenience.
Medical care
Private clinics, dental offices, and pharmacies in the Coco area serve day-to-day needs, with 24-hour facilities nearby. For specialized and emergency care, private hospitals are in Liberia (about 35–45 minutes). Many expat residents carry private insurance and also enroll in Costa Rica’s public Caja system.
Getting around & access
Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) is about 30–40 minutes away, with direct flights from major U.S. and Canadian cities. Marina Papagayo is a short drive up the coast for boating and sportfishing, and Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa are within about ten minutes.
