Playas del Coco Local Guide
Coco is the most self-contained beach town on the Gold Coast — you can bank, see a doctor, work out, provision a kitchen, and launch a dive boat all within a few minutes. Here’s a quick orientation for residents and visitors.
The beach & the water
Coco’s crescent-shaped bay has a long stretch of soft, golden-gray sand and a grassy beachfront park at its center. This is Costa Rica’s sportfishing and scuba capital: 15-plus dive sites including the Catalina Islands (manta rays November–May) and the Bat Islands within Santa Rosa National Park — the only place in the country to dive with bull sharks. Sportfishing charters run for mahi-mahi, tuna, wahoo, and roosterfish inshore and marlin and sailfish offshore, and Marina Papagayo just north on the peninsula offers full-service berths.
Dining & nightlife
Coco has the liveliest dining and nightlife of the Gold Coast towns — beachfront seafood and ceviche, sushi, wood-fired pizza, steakhouses, and craft-beer garden bars, plus live music near the main beach and poolside lounges that run late. The walkable center means you can stroll from dinner to a nightcap without driving.
Groceries & everyday services
Town has well-stocked supermarkets — including a full U.S.-style Auto Mercado at the Pacifico Village Shops — plus banks and ATMs, pharmacies, hardware and home-goods stores, gyms, and reliable internet, most within a few minutes. Big-box shopping is about 25–30 minutes away in Liberia.
Medical care
Coco has private clinics, dental offices, and pharmacies for day-to-day care. For specialized and emergency care, the San Rafael Arcángel and CIMA-affiliated private hospitals and the public hospital are in Liberia, roughly 30–40 minutes away. Many expat residents carry private insurance and also enroll in Costa Rica’s public Caja system.
Getting around & access
Liberia’s Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR) is just 25–30 minutes away — the shortest airport transfer of any established beach town on the coast, with direct flights from major U.S. and Canadian cities. Coco’s compact center is walkable, and neighboring Playa Hermosa and Ocotal are within about ten minutes.
