Potrero Grande is bordered by two rivers, the Rio Guineal and the Rio Coto Brus.  It’s a convenient place to live because it has all of the necessities- shops, food stores, a church- Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, a central park and plaza, banks, cafes, and it’s close to so many places to explore nature and observe wildlife.

The Chirripo National Park is the national park of Costa Rica.  It is quite large, covering parts of San Jose, Limon, and Cartago. Cerro Chirripo is a peak in the park that is 12,530 feet.  It’s the highest mountain in Costa Rica, famous for hiking.  Groups get together in Potrero Grande to attempt to conquer it.  It’s the 38th most prominent peak in the world.  This park has five ecosystems and three forest types.

La Amistad International Park is another place of interest for Potrero Grande residents and visitors.  It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Five big cat species roam the park: pumas, ocelots, margays, jaguars, and jaguarundis.  The park also has 600 species of birds, including the yellow-green finch and the umbrellabird. Three indigenous tribes live within the park’s borders.

There are a number of restaurants and bars in Potrero Grande.  El Bar caters to the electronic music crowd. There’s also Bar Y Restaurante Hilda and Soda Rafita, the number one local restaurant with the best natural fruit juices.
