Sámara Local Guide
What life looks like in Sámara: a safe, swimmable bay, a friendly town with a real local-and-international mix, and the palm-lined beauty of Playa Carrillo next door — relaxed Costa Rican coastal living at an easy pace.
Location & getting there
Sámara sits on the Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in southern Guanacaste, about a 2 to 2.5-hour drive from Liberia International Airport (LIR), with a small airstrip at Playa Carrillo and the town of Nicoya nearby for services.
The beaches
Playa Sámara is a calm, reef-protected crescent regarded as one of the country’s safest swimming beaches, ideal for families and beginner surfers. A short drive south, Playa Carrillo is a postcard-perfect palm-fringed beach with no development on the sand.
Dining, services & community
Sámara’s walkable town center offers restaurants, cafés, shops, banks, a clinic, and a genuine community feel, with a bilingual international school nearby — a practical, welcoming base for full-time living.
Things to do
Swim and paddleboard the calm bay, learn to surf, kayak or snorkel to Isla Chora, ride horses on the beach, and explore the wildlife and quiet beaches of the surrounding Nicoya coast.
