Location & getting there
Santa Teresa and Mal País sit at the southwestern end of the Nicoya Peninsula, reached via the town of Cóbano. Most arrive by car and the Puntarenas ferry, or by a short flight into Tambor airport about 45 minutes away. Four-wheel drive is useful on the coastal roads.
The beaches & surf
The coast runs from Playa Carmen — the central hub — through Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa to the quieter Mal País. The surf is consistent and world-class nearly year-round, with beach breaks suited to every level and miles of sand for walking and sunsets.

Despite its remote feel, Santa Teresa offers gourmet restaurants, cafés, boutiques, yoga studios, gyms, surf schools, banks, pharmacies, and medical care — a genuinely livable town with an outsized food and wellness scene.

Surf and take lessons, practice yoga, ride ATVs and horses, and visit the Cabo Blanco Absolute Nature Reserve at the peninsula’s tip — Costa Rica’s oldest protected area — for hiking and wildlife.
