Community and Lifestyle in Herradura, Costa Rica.

For retirees, Herradura is among the most coveted beach towns in all of Costa Rica. This is in large part due to the presence of the luxurious Marriott Los Suenos Resort and Marina, a massive 1,100-acre resort featuring 201 hotel rooms, 500 luxury residences, a 600-acre rainforest reserve, 18-hole golf course, and a 200-slip marina. The La Iguana Golf Course is a championship course designed by Ted Robinson, who sought to interweave Costa Rica’s natural beauty and wildlife with that of the golf course.  As a result,  local caddies are reportedly able to point out over 150 species of wildlife as players practice their swings. The beach club is only for residents, but anyone who lives nearby can take advantage of the six fine restaurants offered on the property, including Bambu Sushi and Dolce Vita Coffee and Sweets.  Locals can also make use of the spa, salon, bank, legal services, shipping service, boat rentals, and car rentals.

Younger professionals and their families are also increasingly coming to Herradura.  Many young families are realizing that they can live anywhere in the world with the advent of modern technology, and Herradura’s calm, family-friendly beaches and the prestigious Falcon International School offer families the chance to have it all.

Most residents are happy to spend their days at the beach, but for those seeking more adventure, there exists several activities in Herradura, including horseback riding (through waterfalls!), cruises to Tortuga Island, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, and cycling.  A major favorite in the area is wildlife watching at the Tarcoles River, where tourists are amazed at the natural-occurring concentration of crocodiles in such a small area.

In addition, master chefs have long been settling in Herradura, creating a fine array of restaurants to sample. The Amphitheater Restaurant, which is located in an actual amphitheater with amazing 180-degree views, is a delight in terms of both gastronomy and architecture. For an afternoon treat, El Mirador is a restaurant that specializes in creative fruit sauces and desserts. Vegetarians and vegans will love the Pura Vida Pantry, which is an aspiring raw and vegan restaurant that also features fresh juices.
