Life in Malpais, Costa Rica.

The first thing people notice in Malpais is the stunning beaches, many of which are made up of tiny seashells in lieu of sand. Often the next thing that people notice is the amount of incredible artists in the area.  Malpais is a trendy town with a hippie-like feel. The artists make jewelry and paintings to sell on the street or in little storefronts.  They are often quiet and introspective and let their work speak for itself.

While Malpais caters to retirees who want privacy and fabulous weather, most of the residents and tourists enjoying Malpais are young adults. There are surfers and fishermen galore.  Small fishing boats go out daily and anyone can join for a nominal fee.  There is a surf shop every few blocks. Yoga and meditation classes are enjoyed by nearly all residents, and classes are offered at many hotels.

Individuals and families enjoy wandering through nearby Cabo Blanco National Park. Some like to see nature by ziplining along cables or riding horseback for hours along the trails.  Playa Cuevas, also known as “the secret beach,” is another exceptional place to see. The secret is out now it’s the best snorkeling spot in the area!  Along Playa Cuevas, it’s not unusual to spot dolphins, delighting residents and tourists alike.

“The Bakery” is open all day and, despite its name, it is much more than a bakery. The Bakery serves all meals, including pizza at any time of day, and their pastries are something to write home about!  For special or romantic occasions, The Papaya Lounge is the place to go. The Papaya Lounge’s contemporary feel and incredible views are outdone only by its delicious seafood.
