Climate and Location

Geography and Climate in Manzanillo, Costa Rica.

Manzanillo is the southernmost town on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast. The town itself consists of a few neighborhood streets and one long beach.  Just south of town is the Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, with gorgeous rainforest and wilderness beaches, which spans all the way to Panama.  North of town is a popular beach among surfers, Playa Grande.

About ten miles north of Manzanillo, connected by a paved road, lies the popular tourist town of Puerto Viejo.  Between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo are several beach communities including Playa Cocles, Playa Chiquita, and Punta Uva.  Costa Rica’s capitol city of San Jose with an international airport is a four hour drive away and the Panama border is less than thirty minutes away.

Climate

Temperatures in Manzanillo typically remain in the mid eighties (degrees in Fahreheit) year round with lots of gentle breeze from the ocean.  Manzanillo does have a dry season and a rainy season, however unlike the Pacific Coast, it’s possible for rain year round. The jungle stays lush and animals are active as a result. Still, occasional downpours can make travel a challenge at times. The driest and sunniest months are January through March with these months also offering the biggest swells for surfers and August through October with calm water for fishing and snorkeling.  November and June often bring heavy rains.
