Life in Pital

Daily life in Pital revolves around farming, and typically the whole town rises with the roosters and goes to bed early. It’s not unheard of for restaurants to begin serving dinner at 3 p.m. Some locals work outside farming, finding employment at the local sawmill, at restaurants, or working from home.

Residents who are retired take advantage of the bright mornings to relax in hammocks, read books, or make a trip to the farmer’s market for the freshest fruits and vegetables. The ladies of the town tend to share recipes and go shopping together, and the men love watching the soccer games at the town’s field or going to a bullfight. Residents of all ages dine at Soda Monterrey for good chicken and good conversation.

Families often go to one of the nearby volcanoes or national parks on days off from school or on weekends. Another nearby attraction is the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a wildlife preserve with over 100 animals and a great environmental education program. La Paz Waterfall Gardens has five waterfalls, a cloud forest, a rain forest, hiking trails, and aviary, an orchid garden, an insect exhibit, a butterfly observatory, and an assortment of monkeys, sloths, and pumas. They also offer an on-site buffet that was rated “4 Forks” (the highest rating) by the Tourism Council. Another place to see wildlife is at the Laguna de Lagarto Hotel, which gives out a list of 390 bird species to find on their grounds.
