Community and Lifestyle in Tres Rios, Costa Rica.

While only a short drive from San Jose, the views of Tres Rios are much more picturesque than those of San Jose.  Fertile soil and green hills make up most of the city. Traditional tin roofed houses pepper the skyline with city lights shining bright in the evening. You won’t encounter many other towns of this size in the Central Valley with a more quintessential Costa Rican backdrop.

It’s hard to find a town in the Central Valley with people friendlier than those of Tres Rios. Much like Cartago, Tres Rios has a familial community with people passing by and chatting in the streets throughout the day. It balances the gap between the hustle and bustle of San Jose and the laidback streets of Cartago.  You’ll find a plethora of small business and local hang outs through the city.

Tres Rios is world renowned for their coffee. While residents now rely on other income than from coffee farming, it’s still an important part of the community. The local soil is fortified by past eruptions of the nearby Irazu Volcano. The result is a rich, bold coffee with an intoxicating aroma.

For local health care services, most residents go to the prestigious Hospital Universal, which was the first private hospital in Cartago. Services include general surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, OBGYN, radiology, internal medicine among others.

Volcan Irazu is one of the most visited active volcanoes in Costa Rica. One can reach the volcano from Cartago in about 40 minutes time. Here, you’ll see numerous craters and Costa Rica’s highest active volcano. The national park is home to hundreds of different types of animals and plants. While Irazu hasn’t erupted since 1994, it’s still very much active and a true sight to behold.
