Matina: Southern Hospitality on the Caribbean Sea.

If you have ever been charmed by the hospitality in the southern US, wait until you meet the people of Matina, Costa Rica! Their kindness is incredibly welcoming, and the area is simple and carefree, with pickup basketball and soccer games occurring all the time. There are homes near the center, with friendly neighbors on either side, and other homes hidden among the cacao and banana plantations. The main attraction in Matina is really is the culture; one won’t find a warmer people to spend days with. Neighbors become family and help one another out in Matina.

Matina is broken up into numerous villages, including Baltimore, Barra de Matina Norte, Bristol, Colonia Puriscaleña, Corina, Chirripó, Esperanza, Helvetia, Hilda, Línea B, Luisa Oeste, Milla 4, Milla 23, San Miguel, and Victoria. Each of these places are small towns that surround the city center. 

The homes closest to the center are situated very near one another. On some blocks, they are attached. As one moves outward from the city, there are more private options in various sizes and styles. Wooden cabins are the most popular housing type near the beachfront.  

In between the beachfront and the city, there are simple homes for small families. Larger homes are encompassed by the jungle, and the views from these homes feature lush, green vegetation, as the area gets showers throughout the year. The greenery is beautiful and is constantly surprising residents with beautiful flowers and tropical fruits.

Investment options in Matina include lodges, apartment complexes, and farms. Vacation rentals are not common in the area, so most apartments rent long term. Land sales are not common either; most purchases include a home. Many small homes are under $100,000. Larger jungle homes average approximately $225,000. It’s possible to get a simple cabin style home with an ocean view for just $99,000 in Matina.
