Getting to and Around in Playa Grande, Costa Rica.

Playa Grande is located on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula. It sits just 20 minutes north of the large beach town of Tamarindo, which is a major tourist destination in this corner of the country.

Seasonal residents and visitors can fly into the nearby Daniel Oduber International Airport, which is less than an hour's drive away. Domestic flights to and from the Tamarindo airport make travel around Costa Rica even easier.  Traveling between Playa Grande and Costa Rica's capital, San Jose, takes about four hours in a car.

Atmosphere

Interestingly, Playa Grande sits within the boundaries of a national park. Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas de Guanacaste is an important turtle nesting area that is frequented by leatherback turtles from October through February each year. Because of its history as a favored turtle nesting site, beachfront developments are highly regulated.

And that suits Playa Grande residents just fine, as they aren't looking for lots of action at their doorstep.  Beach combing, surfing, and relaxing poolside are some of the favored activities here. When residents feel like going out for world-class dining or to spend a day shopping, they'll go to nearby Tamarindo and get their fair share of both. Back home in Playa Grande, they don't have to worry about hordes of tourists or boatloads of traffic.
