Community and Lifestyle

Community and Lifestyle in Tilarán and Tronadora, Costa Rica.

Tronadora is located right on the lake, and Tilarán is the larger town very near it. The towns have restaurants, hardware and grocery stores, doctors and dentists, and banks. Tronadora is known for its gorgeous lake views while Tilarán is notable for broad, clean streets and many shops. Both towns have fresh food markets, convenience stores, Catholic and Baptist churches, and plenty of hiking trails. There are many tours available in the area, such as zip-lining through the canopy and class I-II river rafting on the Corobici River.

Fishing is the most popular activity in the area.  There are rainbow bass, locally known as “guapote,” that  grow to just 12 pounds but are known to fight twice as hard as other bass fish. The guapote are abundant from March to July, as are the machaca fish.  Swimming is also popular since the waters in Lake Arenal are always warm and welcoming.

After a fun-filled day at the lake or the Tilawa Viento Windsurfing Center (rated as one of the finest windsurfing locations in the world), residents sometimes go to the San Luis Yacht Club, which offers boat rentals, jacuzzis, pools, a waterslide, and a fine restaurant and sports bar with a game room.

The Quebrada Tronadora Hotel also features two of the best restaurants in the area, is surrounded by nice gardens, and offers free WIFI.  Another notable restaurant is the Brisas del Lago, a quaint restaurant that has been called the best restaurant on the Tilarán side of Lake Arenal.
