Climate and Location

Cartago should be a priority on your list of places to see if you come to Costa Rica for its spectacular views. Its valley setting makes sweeping vistas of the mountains a regular sight.  Many hotels and restaurants offer a mirador, or a balcony view of its valleys. Some of the best sunrises and sunsets away from the beach can be found in Cartago.

Cartago has some of the most temperate and cool weather in the country. During the dry season from December to the beginning of May, temperatures are rarely higher than 78 degrees Fahrenheit. The rainy season, from May to November, is lighter than other parts of Costa Rica. Afternoons and nights tend to be chilly enough for a sweater or jacket.  This ideal weather attracts expats from all over the world.

Getting There and the Surrounding Area

Cartago is found in the Central Valley of Costa Rica. It is located within the Cartago province, just 16 miles east of the capital, San Jose. Cartago is one of the major cities in the country and generally can be navigated by comfortable, paved roads. Public buses also make regular trips to and from San Jose.

You won’t find a beachfront home in Cartago. For the closest ocean views, you will need to head to Quepos or Jaco. Quepos is about 65 miles away from Cartago in the province of Puntarenas. This popular beach for tourists and natives alike is near the Manuel Antonio National Park, one of the famous parks in the country. Quepos is an excellent beach town for relaxing, dining out and sightseeing. Jaco, located about 75 miles away from Cartago, features an active nightlife scene and excellent surfing.
