Escazu: A Posh Neighborhood With All the Amenities of Home

While Escazu’s name comes from the indigenous word “Izt-kat-zu,” meaning “resting stone,” the city is now more affectionately known as “Little America” by Costa Rica’s expat population.  There are a number of reasons for this designation. First, Escazu is chic, upscale, and reminiscent of a California city.  Second, there are so many amenities that residents tend to forget they are in Central America. Third, it is not necessary to speak a word of Spanish; most residents are happy to practice their English when the opportunity arises. It is no wonder Escazu is home to one of the largest expat communities in the country. It just feels like home.

Real Estate in Escazu

With block after block of apartments and homes, there are no shortage of housing options in Escazu.  However, because professionals from all over the world seek to be in Escazu due to its proximity to San Jose and its high-class amenities, rents and purchase prices can be quite high. Most expats prefer the more prestigious parts of Escazu, San Rafael and San Antonio.

San Rafael is known as the “Beverly Hills of Escazu” and offers closer proximity to the downtown area and its amenities.   San Antonio offers more rural options with impressive mountainous views and more land. There are condominiums, townhomes, and stunning mansions in both of these areas.  There are also many condominium developments surrounding downtown Escazu, although most of these developments are still in-progress.

In addition to condos, townhomes, single-family homes, and mansions, there are also bungalows in Escazu.  Set up like guesthouses on larger properties, bungalows are the most common type of vacation rentals.  People usually rent short-term while they are searching for their own homes.

The price one pays for Escazu real estate varies according to location and property type, but, generally, when compared to real estate prices in the rest of the country, prices are quite high in Escazu.  This is a reflection of the demand from professionals and successful expats to live in a beautiful area, experience the phenomenal weather, and still be close to all of the amenities they were accustomed to back home.

Even though prices are generally higher, condos and homes can be purchased from $170,000 and $300,000, respectively.   Luxury homes in Escazu can costs several millions of dollars.  Many of these larger homes have gyms, tropical gardens, wine cellars, and infinity pools, from which homeowners can watch the water fade into the color of the sky.
