Escazu, Costa Rica
While Escazu’s name comes from the indigenous word “Izt-kat-zu,” meaning “resting stone,” the city is now more affectionately known as “Little America” by Costa Rica’s expat population. There are a number of reasons for this designation. First, Escazu is chic, upscale, and reminiscent of a California city. Second, there are so many amenities that residents tend to forget they are in Central America. Third, it is not necessary to speak a word of Spanish; most residents are happy to practice their English when the opportunity arises. It is no wonder Escazu is home to one of the largest expat communities in the country. It just feels like home.
